A tragic incident occurred at the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School in New York on Wednesday, June 10, when a 12-year-old sixth-grade student suffered a medical emergency and lost his life. According to Yonkers school officials, the student became unresponsive around 11:40 a.m. and was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital despite attempts by first responders to revive him. The cause of the medical emergency is being investigated, with suspicions that it may be linked to the 'One Bite' TikTok challenge, where participants attempt to eat as much food as possible in one bite. As reported by News 12, the student might have been eating a donut when the incident occurred. Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Anibal Soler Jr. expressed his condolences, stating that the school community is focused on supporting the student's classmates, teachers, and staff during this difficult time. 'As police investigate the nature of the medical emergency, we remain focused on caring for his classmates, teachers and staff who are in terrible pain,' Soler Jr. said. The Yonkers Police Commissioner, Christopher Sapienza, also confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, saying, 'Anything about a TikTok challenge, anything about witness statements, the events leading up to this we’re going to investigate and we’re going to continue with the investigation from beginning to end.' The incident did not occur in the cafeteria but on the fourth floor hallway, where staff immediately provided aid in an attempt to dislodge the food stuck in the student's throat. The school chief described the deceased student as 'a bright light in the building,' saying, 'Everybody loved him, everybody knew him. He was energy, he was joy.' Mayor Mike Spano also released a statement, saying, 'Today’s tragic loss is heartbreaking. The death of a child is every parent’s worst nightmare, and our entire Yonkers community is grieving alongside this student’s family, classmates, teachers, and loved ones.'
