New Zealand Rolls Out New Visa Plan for Foreign Graduates

In an effort to enhance its post-study work system, the New Zealand government has introduced a new visa policy aimed at international students who have completed their studies in the country. According to the New Zealand Immigration website, starting from November 16, 2026, eligible international students will be able to apply for a Short-term Graduate Work Visa, which allows them to work in the country for six months after completing their studies. This visa is designed to serve as a bridge into employment for graduates, providing them with the opportunity to gain work experience and seek job opportunities. To be eligible for the visa, applicants must have completed a qualification at NZQF Level 5 to 7 after at least 24 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand, and they must also have at least NZD $5,000 in available funds, meet health requirements, and apply within three months of their student visa expiring. The visa has certain restrictions, including the fact that it can only be granted once per person, cannot be extended, and will not be available to applicants who have previously held a Post Study Work Visa. Additionally, holders of the visa will not be allowed to run a business or support family members for visas. The New Zealand government has also announced changes to its Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) policy, which will now allow graduates who complete a Level 7 graduate diploma in New Zealand to qualify for a PSWV if they also hold a bachelor’s degree, either from New Zealand or overseas. The PSWV will generally match the length of time spent studying the graduate diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year. The government says the overall reforms are intended to maintain the integrity of New Zealand’s international education system while ensuring post-study work rights are more closely tied to skills shortages and economic demand.
