US Mother Indicted for Murder in Teen Daughter's Starvation Death

Full Story
A North Carolina woman is now facing a murder charge following the tragic death of her teenage daughter, who was found weighing a mere 35 pounds with “sunken eyes” after allegedly enduring years of severe neglect. Kymberli Bowden, 45, was formally charged with first-degree murder on Thursday. This development came after an autopsy of her 13-year-old daughter, identified only by the initials ZT, concluded that the cause of death was acute necrotizing pneumonia and inanition, which signifies extreme malnutrition and physical wasting, as reported by FOX 8 News.
Authorities stated that ZT's body was discovered at Bowden's residence on October 14, 2025, and it was estimated that she had been deceased for approximately two days prior to the discovery. During court proceedings, the prosecution conveyed the medical examiner's description of ZT as “extremely emaciated,” noting her hair was matted, dull, and unkempt, her ears were dirty, and her face appeared gaunt with deeply “sunken areas around her eyes,” according to FOX 8 News. The court was further informed that the teen's body was described as “skinny” and “small,” in stark contrast to her documented weight of 63 to 65 pounds from recent medical records.
Patrol officers were dispatched to Bowden's High Point home last year after concerned family members reported not having seen ZT for several months. Upon arrival, police located ZT's 13-year-old twin brother alive within the house. A warrant obtained by The News Observer revealed that the boy lacked adequate nutrition, appropriate clothing, and sanitary living conditions when law enforcement found him. While he survived the ordeal, he has reportedly suffered “serious” psychological harm.
Police department call logs from High Point indicate numerous instances where concerned neighbours had requested welfare checks on the children residing at the home, FOX 8 News highlighted. Police reports also depicted the interior of the residence as being cluttered with trash and decaying food.
Initially, Bowden, 45, was arrested and charged with two counts of felony child abuse and concealing a death. The murder charge was only recently filed, as authorities waited for the official determination of the cause of death. If convicted on the murder charge, she could face a life sentence. Her next court appearance is scheduled for December.
