In a recent address, President Bola Tinubu emphasized the vital role of religious leaders in combating terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry. Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the Grand Maulud of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tijani in Kano, Tinubu urged clerics to consistently denounce violence and advocate for peace education, religious literacy, and moral development. He stressed that religious institutions should utilize their influence to promote justice, responsibility, and compassion, while reminding citizens that legitimate grievances should not be used to justify lawlessness or violence. Tinubu noted that the current global climate, marked by conflicts, uncertainty, and violent extremism, makes the intervention of spiritual leaders increasingly crucial. He cited a UN report, which states that 117.8 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide by the end of 2025, highlighting the need for collective action. The President recognized the significance of religious and traditional leaders in promoting tolerance, countering misinformation, and fostering peaceful coexistence. He reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to regional cooperation, counter-terrorism, and economic integration, emphasizing the country's strategic position in West Africa and the Sahel region. Tinubu also assured that his administration would continue to uphold freedom of worship, while strengthening collaboration with religious and traditional institutions to promote national cohesion. He paid tribute to the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, a renowned Islamic scholar, and welcomed the World Khalifa of the Tijjaniyya Order, scholars, and spiritual leaders from across the globe.
