Political Poster Dispute Leads to Death of Bauchi Islamic Teacher

The serene atmosphere of Karodin Madaki quarters in Bauchi metropolis was shattered by grief and disbelief following the brutal killing of a respected Islamiyya teacher, Rilwanu Dauda. The 42-year-old cleric was reportedly stabbed to death on Sunday by two brothers, alleged political thugs, after a heated argument concerning political posters.
Investigations revealed that Dauda suffered a fatal stab wound to his stomach and unfortunately passed away en route to the hospital. His elder brother, Hamza Dauda, recounted the tragic events, stating that the altercation began around 10 am. Rilwanu had asked the suspected thugs to remove political posters they had affixed to a billboard situated near his residence. Their refusal escalated into a physical confrontation.
According to Hamza, "The younger of the two thugs hit Malam with a stick; while the elder hit him with a knife on the head. Malam immediately collapsed and people around intervened and forced all the thugs to leave the scene." However, the situation took a turn for the worse when the younger assailant crossed the road, entered his family home, and reappeared moments later, armed with a knife. He then encountered Rilwanu at the main gate of their family house and stabbed him in the stomach before fleeing the scene.
Witnesses reportedly saw the assailant escape after the stabbing. It was only after his departure that onlookers noticed Rilwanu bleeding profusely. He was immediately rushed to the Bauchi State Specialist Hospital, where his death was confirmed. "I was at my place of work when a friend of mine, Babangida, called me on phone and asked me to come to the hospital because my younger brother was dead. On arrival, I checked his body and saw where he was stabbed in the stomach," Hamza stated. He lamented, "Malam was someone who never quarreled with others. Unfortunately, look at how he was brutally murdered for no reason." Hamza Dauda has since appealed to both the government and the police to ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible, emphasizing the family’s demand for justice.
Residents who spoke to Daily Trust described the deceased cleric as a humble, kind, and humane gentleman. Muhammad Aminu, a resident, expressed his dismay at the incident, questioning the diminishing value of human life. "I wonder why people no longer value human life. People can kill over a slight provocation. This is unfortunate and something should be done to prevent its recurrence," he said. Aminu further speculated that the attackers might have harbored a pre-existing grudge, given that the initial fight had been quelled by bystanders before the assailant returned to inflict the fatal wound. "Late Malam Rilwanu was a kind and humane cleric who related well with people. He was religious and generous. You hardly saw him in this area except when he came to his family house. He was residing with his family along Ibrahim Bako Road."
Musa Yusuf, another resident, described Malam Rilwanu’s passing as a significant loss to his family and the entire Karofin Madaki community, as well as Bauchi State. Bello Ibrahim, a neighbour, corroborated the sequence of events, adding that the thugs called a colleague to the scene to paste the poster, which intensified the argument. He clarified that one of the thugs used a dagger to stab Rilwanu in the chest before escaping. Sani Musa praised Rilwanu as a dedicated Islamiyya teacher from a respectable background, committed to his family.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family. The Governor pledged to cover the educational expenses of Rilwanu’s children from primary school through university. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring law and order, vowing that perpetrators of violent crimes would face justice. Governor Mohammed urged citizens to resolve disputes peacefully and collaborate with security agencies by providing crucial information to aid ongoing investigations and crime prevention efforts.
Responding on behalf of the family, Mallam Bala Dauda expressed gratitude to the Governor for his visit and support during their difficult time. ASP Nafi’u Habib, the Bauchi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed that an investigation has commenced. "No stone will be left unturned in the course of our investigation until the killers of the cleric are arrested. We will not relent until we arrest them all," he stated. While no arrests have been made yet, Habib assured the public that the culprits would be apprehended and brought to justice, urging citizens to report crimes to the authorities to assist in crime reduction efforts.
