in Ghana for Passport Forgery — Nigerian Woman Bags Six Months Jail Term

In a recent development, a 41-year-old Nigerian welder, Franca Wilson, has been handed a six-month prison sentence by a Ghanaian court for attempting to acquire a Ghanaian passport using falsified nationality documents. Wilson, who hails from Rivers State, pleaded guilty to the charges before the Adabraka District Court in Accra on May 12, 2026. Following her guilty plea, she was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour on three counts, with the sentences set to run concurrently. This conviction was confirmed by the Ghana Immigration Service in a report. According to the report, Wilson's arrest occurred on April 24, 2026, at the Accra Passport Application Centre, where immigration officers detected inconsistencies in her nationality claims during the screening process. As quoted by Citi Newsroom, the Ghana Immigration Service stated, "She was subsequently referred to the National Enforcement Department at the GIS Headquarters for further investigations." The investigation that ensued revealed that Wilson is indeed a Nigerian citizen, born to Nigerian parents in Rivers State. However, she had submitted a forged birth certificate, claiming to have been born in Somanya, located in Ghana's Eastern Region, to a Ghanaian mother. The GIS noted that Wilson was unable to provide credible information about the supposed Ghanaian parent during the course of the investigation.
