Cassius Newton, the 34-year-old son of former Chelsea midfielder Eddie Newton, tragically passed away during a desert excursion in the United Arab Emirates, an inquest has revealed. This incident occurred despite his wife's strong appeals for him not to embark on the journey. According to a report by BBC News on Friday, Cassius Newton was discovered deceased in the mountainous Wadi Naqab area of the UAE on July 18, several hours after his last communication with his wife. His friend, Aran Martinson, who accompanied him on the hike, also died.

The Essex Coroner’s Court heard that Newton had contacted his wife around 02:00 local time to inform her of their planned hike, which commenced at approximately 07:00. However, she had pleaded with him not to go, citing the extreme heat conditions. Area coroner Michelle Brown stated that temperatures in the region could reach about 40C, with the canyons making the heat feel even more intense. Brown remarked, “She knew it would be very hot and it can get to about 40C, and the feeling is higher because it’s in the canyons.” The coroner also highlighted that Newton had been out the night before, potentially suffering from insufficient sleep and a poorly charged phone.

Rescue operations were initiated after the wives of both men alerted authorities when they lost contact for several hours. The bodies were located between 3km and 4km from where their vehicle was parked, approximately 350 metres apart. Both men were found lying on their backs amidst large rocks and were transported to a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, where their deaths were confirmed. Coroner Brown classified the deaths as a result of misadventure, describing it as “an intentional trip with unintended consequences.” She noted that the route was a recreational hike that typically took about four hours and did not require specialized equipment.

Text messages exchanged between Martinson and his wife were also presented in court. At 09:26, she sent him a message saying, “You must be cooking.” After hours of no response, she later wrote, “[You are] actually trying to tip me over the edge I swear.” Brown concluded that both individuals succumbed to severe increases in body temperature, leading to organ failure. Newton, originally from Poole, had recently relocated to Ras Al Khaimah, where he resided with his wife. Martinson had also recently moved to the UAE. Eddie Newton, who played for Chelsea and had two stints as the club’s assistant manager, traveled to the UAE to identify his son’s body. Chelsea Football Club expressed its profound sadness, stating it was “devastated” by Cassius Newton’s death. Martinson’s wife honored her late husband online, describing him as “incredibly driven, hardworking and ambitious.”
