Obasanjo Declares Nigeria Rich Enough to Ditch Poverty

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently asserted that Nigeria has no reason to be impoverished, emphasizing the nation's abundant natural endowments, vast agricultural capacity, and robust human capital as sufficient foundations for a flourishing economy. Speaking during an appearance on C-Suite Café, Obasanjo delved into Nigeria's current economic struggles and, from his perspective, the country's failure to adequately leverage its inherent wealth, among other critical subjects.

In a video recording from September 10, shared on YouTube, the former head of state highlighted Nigeria's millions of hectares of cultivable land, its favourable climate, and plentiful water sources. These, he noted, are capable of sustaining significant food production and fostering large-scale agricultural exports. He also drew attention to the nation's human capital, specifically acknowledging the entrepreneurial drive and intellectual prowess of Nigerians both within the country and in the diaspora, which he described as a crucial yet underutilized asset.

Obasanjo further pointed out that beyond crude oil and natural gas, Nigeria possesses substantial solid mineral deposits. These resources, he argued, could play a vital role in diversifying the country's revenue streams. The discussion also included mentions of related news, such as the arrival of the British High Commissioner-designate, Obasanjo's condemnation of xenophobia in South Africa while recalling Nigeria’s anti-apartheid stance, and Peter Obi’s call for urgent leadership reform in Nigeria.

Addressing the root causes of the nation's economic challenges, the former president attributed many issues to policy inconsistencies. He particularly criticized the tendency for long-term development plans and agricultural initiatives to be abandoned whenever new administrations assume power. Obasanjo also voiced concerns regarding the nation's public borrowing habits, recalling the significant debt relief amounting to approximately $30 billion that his administration secured for Nigeria in 2005 and 2006.

He further identified widespread corruption, the rampant theft of crude oil, and various leakages within the revenue generation system as additional factors that undermine Nigeria's capacity to effectively deploy its resources for national development.

According to Obasanjo, overcoming Nigeria's poverty requires a strong political will, consistent implementation of policies—especially those aimed at ensuring food security—and unwavering fiscal accountability across all tiers of government. He expressed confidence that the country's economic difficulties are surmountable if its vast resources are managed judiciously and if successive governments commit to maintaining policies geared towards long-term progress.
