In a bid to stimulate Nigeria's industrial revival, the Bank of Industry has introduced a novel financing approach. This strategy involves allocating 80% of its large enterprise loans to key sectors, including power, manufacturing, agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, and digital infrastructure. According to the bank's 2025 Annual Development Impact Report, this move is part of its 2026 strategy aimed at tackling the country's major economic challenges, such as rising inflation, foreign exchange shortages, high energy costs, and weak industrial productivity. The report describes 2026 as a 'strategic inflection point' in the bank's three-year transformation agenda. To achieve its objectives, the bank plans to channel 35% of its total funding to micro, small, and medium enterprises. Furthermore, 30% of its large enterprise financing will be dedicated to infrastructure projects, while 15% will be allocated to women-owned businesses and 20% to young entrepreneurs. The bank also intends to focus on green projects and digital initiatives, committing 10% and 15% of its financing to these areas, respectively. The BOI's ambition is to double its asset base by 2027, driving industrialization, job creation, and economic resilience. By 2026, the bank aims to deploy capital at scale into priority sectors, addressing structural bottlenecks that hinder Nigeria's productivity. The bank has identified power, transport, manufacturing, agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, and digital technology as transformational sectors capable of unlocking productivity and reducing the country's dependence on imports. By financing these sectors, the BOI believes it can help ease pressure on the foreign exchange market, reduce import dependence, and stimulate economic growth. The bank's digital lending platforms and partnerships with commercial and microfinance banks will provide small businesses with easier access to funding, enabling them to shift from survival to growth.
