Ogun State Joins Forces to Combat Climate Change Through Tree Planting

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has emphasized the importance of collective action in protecting the environment and promoting sustainability. According to a statement released by the Ogun State Government, Abiodun made this statement during the 2026 Ogun Tree Planting Day, which was themed 'Root for the Future: Plant a Tree, Heal the Earth.' The event, organized by the state's Ministries of Environment and Forestry, took place at the Orange Valley Estate in Abeokuta. Abiodun, who was represented by his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, noted that the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, with rising temperatures, flooding, and land degradation affecting communities and the economy. He described tree planting as a vital step towards mitigating these effects and ensuring a sustainable future. The governor commended President Bola Tinubu's administration for prioritizing environmental sustainability through various initiatives, including the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan and the National Clean Cooking Policy. Abiodun also praised the efforts of the Ogun State Ministries of Environment and Forestry for sustaining the annual tree-planting program, which has grown into a statewide movement involving schools, corporate organizations, and individual citizens. The Ogun State Head of Service, Olanrewaju Iskeel Saka, urged residents to make tree planting a part of their daily lives, while the Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, highlighted the state government's efforts to resuscitate moribund forest reserves. The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, emphasized the importance of trees in capturing carbon, improving air quality, and providing habitats for wildlife. He encouraged residents to nurture tree seedlings and protect them from damage, and called on students and young people to become 'Environmental Champions of Tomorrow' by planting trees in their schools and communities.
