Tinubu's Economic Reforms Under Fire as Atiku Challenges Presidency's Claims

The recent defence of President Bola Tinubu's economic policies by the presidency has been met with criticism from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, has argued that the government's claims of economic recovery are not supported by the realities on the ground. He pointed out that despite the government's celebration of macroeconomic gains, ordinary Nigerians are struggling to survive due to rising poverty, food insecurity, and worsening living conditions. Atiku cited a report by the International Monetary Fund, which estimated that 63 per cent of Nigerians live below the national poverty line, with about 27 million people experiencing food insecurity in late 2025. He also questioned the government's borrowing programme, saying that the real issue is not the size of the public debt, but whether the borrowed funds have been used to improve infrastructure, create jobs, and enhance living standards. The former Vice President further criticised the government's defence of its fuel subsidy removal policy, arguing that while Nigerians accepted the need for reforms, they have yet to see the promised improvements in public services. Atiku concluded that the presidency should focus on addressing the economic hardships facing citizens rather than defending its record. The exchange is part of an escalating war of words between the presidency and Atiku over the Tinubu-led economic reforms. While the Federal Government maintains that its policies have stabilised the economy and positioned Nigeria for growth, opposition figures argue that the reforms have imposed severe hardship on households and businesses without delivering corresponding improvements in living standards.
