Nigerian Army Eyes Deeper Ties with Private Sector for Enhanced Troop Welfare

In a move aimed at bolstering the welfare of its personnel, the Nigerian Army is seeking to forge stronger partnerships with the private sector. This commitment was reiterated by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, during a courtesy visit by a delegation from Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) to the Army Headquarters in Abuja. The visit, led by GTBank's Executive Director, Mr. Ahmed Liman, underscored the bank's role as a vital partner in supporting the army's transformation efforts through innovative financial services. According to Colonel Apollonia Anele, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant General Shaibu commended GTBank for its leadership in digital banking, emphasizing the need for a responsive and technology-driven banking system that can cater to the financial needs of army personnel across the country. This is particularly pertinent given the ongoing expansion of the Nigerian Army, which includes increased recruitment approved by the President. The COAS expressed his confidence that a strengthened partnership with GTBank would not only improve financial service delivery but also enhance the army's operational readiness. Aligning with the 'Soldier First' welfare philosophy of the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General Shaibu appealed to GTBank to expand its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Specifically, he requested support for personnel wounded in action, as well as for the widows and orphans of fallen heroes. Furthermore, he suggested the deployment of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to remote and newly established military barracks to facilitate easier access to banking services, thereby minimizing unnecessary troop movements and enhancing operational efficiency. Earlier, Mr. Liman praised the Nigerian Army for its unwavering dedication to defending the nation's sovereignty and protecting its citizens. He reaffirmed GTBank's commitment to deepening its collaboration with the army by providing tailored financial solutions that cater to its operational and administrative needs, while ensuring full compliance with the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy. GTBank's specialized banking services for government institutions, including dedicated trade desks for processing Letters of Credit to facilitate defence procurement, secure digital platforms for salary administration and contractor payments, and institutional funds management solutions, were highlighted as key areas of support.
