The National Pension Commission, PenCom, has taken steps to address the concerns of Nigeria Police personnel regarding their retirement benefits under the Contributory Pension Scheme, CPS. This move comes as a response to the growing unrest among police officers who feel that their benefits are not on par with those of the Armed Forces. Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, stated that the police have not withdrawn from the CPS, contrary to popular perception, but are rather seeking improved benefits. Oloworaran explained that PenCom is engaging with relevant government authorities to review and enhance police pensions, with the goal of providing better retirement packages for officers. She emphasized that the commission supports efforts to improve the welfare of police personnel and is working to ensure that their concerns are addressed. The PenCom boss also dismissed claims of delays in accessing retirement benefits, stating that retirees with complete documentation receive their entitlements without unnecessary hurdles. Furthermore, Oloworaran announced that PenCom is deploying a Customer Relationship Management platform to strengthen service delivery and improve the experience of pension contributors and retirees. In addition to addressing police pension concerns, PenCom is also working to expand pension coverage to the informal sector, with expectations of significant growth in enrolment over the next two years. The commission has digitized registration, simplified enrolment procedures, and licensed Accredited Pension Agents to take pension services to underserved locations. Oloworaran assured contributors that pension assets remain secure, with strict investment guidelines in place to ensure that funds are invested in financially sound institutions. The Director-General defended PenCom's recent policy permitting Pension Fund Administrators to invest in the parent companies of their pension custodians, stating that the associated risks are minimal and that the move will broaden investment opportunities in strong Tier-1 institutions.
