The Lagos State Government has issued a strong call to businesses, urging them to integrate environmentally sound practices into their e-commerce operations. Officials emphasized that adopting eco-conscious packaging and streamlined, sustainable logistics is no longer optional but crucial for maintaining competitiveness, fostering economic prosperity, and ensuring long-term environmental protection.

This appeal was made last week during the third annual E-COMAGIBUS 2026 event, which took place at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja. The gathering brought together government representatives, industry leaders, and various stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for cultivating a more sustainable digital economy. The event's central theme focused on “Eco-Friendly Packaging and Sustainable Logistics in E-Commerce.”

Speaking at the conference, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, highlighted that while the rapid expansion of e-commerce has opened new avenues for businesses, it also carries a significant responsibility to minimize environmental degradation. Mrs. Ambrose-Medebem, whose address was delivered by the Permanent Secretary of her ministry, Mr. Babatunde Onigbanjo, characterized the event as a vital forum for devising practical solutions that would harmonize commercial growth with ecological preservation.

She stated, "The rapid expansion of e-commerce presents enormous opportunities for economic growth, job creation and enterprise development, but it also places greater responsibility on businesses to adopt sustainable methods of packaging, transportation and product delivery." The Commissioner further underscored that the convenience offered by digital commerce should "not come at the expense of environmental sustainability," asserting that responsible production, environmentally friendly packaging, and efficient logistics have become indispensable components of modern business paradigms. She also noted that Lagos has solidified its position as Nigeria’s commercial nerve center through strategic investments in infrastructure, technology, and innovation, alongside policies that back businesses under the state’s THEMES+ development agenda.

Mr. Onigbanjo, whose remarks were presented by Hauwa Adeeyo, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, reiterated that the conference underscored the increasing urgency for governments, enterprises, and consumers alike to embrace environmentally responsible approaches as online commerce continues its upward trajectory. He pointed out that Nigeria's burgeoning digital economy presents avenues for innovation in various aspects, including packaging, warehousing, transportation, and last-mile delivery, while simultaneously demanding heightened attention to resource efficiency and environmental safeguarding.

According to Mr. Onigbanjo, “The growth of Nigeria’s digital economy presents significant opportunities for innovation in packaging, transportation, warehousing and last-mile delivery, while also demanding greater attention to environmental sustainability and resource efficiency.”

Adding to the discourse, Ms. Titilayo Oshodi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Circular Economy, emphasized that achieving sustainable economic growth necessitates enhanced collaboration among governmental bodies, private sector entities, and development partners. She encouraged stakeholders to commit to partnerships that can yield lasting economic and environmental advantages.

Muminat Osiefa-Atitebi, the Director of the ministry’s Agribusiness Support Unit, explained that the conference was organized with the aim of stimulating innovation, promoting green financing initiatives, strengthening logistics frameworks, and expanding support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This initiative, she concluded, is anticipated to boost productivity, lessen environmental impact, generate employment opportunities, and establish Lagos as a pioneering model for sustainable commerce and green economic development across Africa.
