President Tinubu's 2026 Democracy Day Address: A Call to Action for Nigeria

On the occasion of Nigeria's 2026 Democracy Day, President Bola Tinubu delivered a live broadcast to the nation, reflecting on the country's progress and the challenges that lie ahead. In his speech, President Tinubu celebrated the resilience and determination of the Nigerian people, who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to democracy and the rule of law. He noted that for 27 years, Nigeria has enjoyed unbroken civilian rule, with peaceful transitions of power and the resolution of disputes through legal and legislative means. The President acknowledged that Nigeria's democracy is not perfect, but emphasized the need for Nigerians to continue defending and strengthening it. With elections imminent in Ekiti and Osun States, President Tinubu urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and all parties to ensure that the polls are peaceful and credible. He reminded the National Assembly, Judiciary, Press, and Civil Society of their critical roles as guardians of the nation's democracy, encouraging them to criticize and disagree with him, but never to lose faith in Nigeria. The President also addressed the nation's young people, urging them to build their futures in Nigeria, to work and vote in the country, and to contribute to its development. He expressed his gratitude to the armed forces, police, and intelligence services for their sacrifices and dedication to the nation's security. President Tinubu honored the memory of Nigerians who have fought for democracy and freedom, including Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, and other heroes of the June 12 struggle. He emphasized the need for Nigerians to stand united against crime and terrorism, which he described as enemies of the nation. The President reported on the progress made by his administration in addressing the nation's security challenges, including the recruitment of over 50,000 new police officers and the allocation of N5.41 trillion to defense and security in the 2026 budget. He also highlighted the successes achieved in the fight against terrorism, including the degradation of ISWAP's command center in Borno State and the neutralization of over 13,000 terrorists in the past year. President Tinubu reiterated his administration's commitment to economic reforms, which have restored stability and credibility to economic management. He noted that federation revenues have risen, providing more resources for states and local governments to invest in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security. The President also reported on the progress made in the electricity sector, including the signing of the Electricity Act, which grants states the authority to generate, transmit, and distribute power. He emphasized the need for Nigerians to remain focused on reducing inflation, expanding food production, creating jobs, and improving living standards. In conclusion, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain committed to democracy and to work together to build a more prosperous and secure nation.
