Gov. Abiodun wants stiffer penalties for electricity vandals

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has called for stiffer penalties for vandals of electricity infrastructure and other assets across Nigeria. Abiodun made the call on Friday after the Ogun State Government hosted the Chairman of SIFAX Group, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, alongside the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Mr. Deolu Ijose. He also reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to improve electricity supply across Ogun State as they held strategic discussions on strengthening power infrastructure and expanding access to stable electricity across communities and industrial clusters. “We expressed serious concern over the growing cases of vandalization of public electricity infrastructure, describing the destruction of power facilities and public assets as economic sabotage capable of undermining development and service delivery,” said Abiodun in a post on his official X account. “In view of this, we directed the Office of the Attorney General to work on a stronger legal framework that will prescribe stiffer penalties for vandals and serve as a deterrent against the destruction of critical infrastructure across our state.” The Ogun State Governor said his administration remains committed to deepening collaborations with IBEDC and other stakeholders in the power sector towards achieving sustainable electricity supply, improving the ease of doing business, supporting industries, and enhancing the overall quality of life of the people. “We are optimistic that these renewed partnerships will further drive economic growth and strengthen Ogun State’s position as Nigeria’s leading industrial hub,” Abiodun added.
