Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has publicly accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of widespread compromise and inducement to silence critics. He expressed disappointment in previously principled individuals who now reportedly remain silent on perceived poor governance. Effiong's allegations, shared on social media, highlight intensifying political tensions regarding accountability in Nigeria.
Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has raised concerns over the deepening erosion of public integrity and accountability in Nigeria, making strong allegations against the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on May 19, Effiong painted a grim picture of the country’s political and moral direction, suggesting that widespread compromise among public figures is becoming normalised.
“By the time Bola Tinubu is done destroying this country, we will have to conduct a special census to determine the number of people whose integrity are still intact,” he stated.
He further alleged that the current political environment is characterised by inducement and compromise, claiming that influence is being exerted in unprecedented ways across different levels of society.
“Tinubu is buying and compromising people in an unprecedented way,” Effiong wrote.
The lawyer also expressed disappointment in individuals he described as previously principled actors, accusing them of abandoning their values and failing to speak out against perceived poor governance.
“People we thought were principled are now blind, deaf and dumb to bad governance in our country,” he said, suggesting a widespread culture of silence in the face of governance concerns.
Effiong further criticised the growing tendency among some public commentators and stakeholders to appear neutral while allegedly shielding the government from scrutiny.
According to him, this perceived neutrality is, in practice, a form of indirect support for maintaining the current political order.
“Some are pretending to be neutral, while at the same time making excuses for Tinubu and tacitly opposing any effort to change the status quo,” he added.
The remarks have since circulated widely on social media, drawing mixed reactions from users.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the presidency regarding Effiong’s statements.
The comments reflect growing political tension in public discourse, where debates around governance, accountability, and loyalty among public figures continue to intensify amid Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
It also comes amid allegations of suppressions of opposition parties by the Tinubu led administration, a claim the government has denied.
