Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has picked the Allied Peoples Movement's nomination form to contest the Bauchi South Senatorial District seat in the 2027 elections. The governor's decision comes after his recent defection to the APM, citing undemocratic practices and political intimidation in the current political landscape. Mohammed expressed his readiness to contribute to the party's growth and success.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Thursday, attended the National Executive Committee meeting of the Allied Peoples Movement and picked the party’s nomination form to contest the Bauchi South Senatorial District seat in the 2027 elections. Mohammed disclosed this in a post on his official Facebook page on Thursday, noting that he attended the NEC meeting presided over by the National Chairman of the APM, Yusuf Dantalle. According to the governor, the meeting focused on critical national and party matters and also provided him the opportunity to familiarise himself with members of the party leadership following his recent defection to the APM. “I attended the National Executive Committee meeting of the Allied Peoples Movement, which was presided over by the party’s National Chairman, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, alongside key stakeholders and members of the party leadership,” he stated. Mohammed said the current political landscape in Nigeria had become increasingly difficult due to what he described as undemocratic practices and political intimidation. He explained that, after consultations with political associates, stakeholders and supporters across the country, the APM emerged as the political platform that aligned with their collective vision and aspirations. The governor noted that the party shared his political philosophy in the areas of good governance, internal democracy, justice, inclusiveness and respect for the rule of law. He assured the party leadership of his readiness to contribute resources, experience and political support towards the growth and success of the party. “During the meeting, I officially picked up my nomination form to contest the Senate seat representing Bauchi South Senatorial District under the platform of the APM ahead of the forthcoming elections,” he added. The PUNCH reports that Mohammed officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APM on Saturday, May 2, following the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP. The governor explained that his decision followed consultations with stakeholders after the Supreme Court judgment nullifying parallel conventions conducted by rival factions within the PDP. According to him, the verdict significantly altered the party’s political structure and left its Board of Trustees to temporarily oversee its affairs. Mohammed also stated that despite efforts to restore stability within the PDP, the crisis persisted, making it necessary to seek an alternative political platform. He described the APM as a viable platform free from legal encumbrances and capable of ensuring political continuity and electoral success. The governor also disclosed that members of the State Executive Council interested in contesting elective positions had resigned in compliance with the law.
