A Nigerian national has been arrested by United States immigration authorities in Brooklyn, New York, triggering a wave of protests and clashes that led to multiple arrests and injuries.
The arrest of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, identified by U.S. officials as a Nigerian citizen, was confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a statement posted on X. The agency said Okeke was taken into custody during what it described as a “targeted enforcement operation.”
“Last night, Immigration and Customs enforcement conducted a targeted enforcement operation in Brooklyn that resulted in the arrest of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a criminal illegal alien from Nigeria with previous arrests for ASSAULT AND CRIMINAL DRUG POSSESSION,” DHS said in a statement on Monday.
Officials alleged that the Nigerian national resisted arrest, stating, “During his arrest, Okeke refused to comply with officers’ lawful commands to exit the vehicle and weaponized his vehicle to attempt to hit ICE officers. Okeke became physically combative attempting to punch and elbow ICE officers.”
The statement added, “Our officers followed their training and used the minimum amount of force necessary to make the arrest.”
Following his arrest, Okeke reportedly requested medical attention and was transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn. DHS said his conduct remained erratic at the hospital, alleging that he was “throwing himself to the floor and screaming,” before medical staff eventually cleared him.
However, the situation escalated significantly outside the hospital, where a large crowd gathered in protest of the arrest. Witness accounts and videos circulating online showed demonstrators chanting and expressing anger over the actions of immigration officers.
The DHS statement claimed that “a significant crowd of anti-ICE agitators gathered at the hospital and became violent,” adding that “the protestors damaged several ICE vehicles and assaulted ICE officers, resulting in minor injuries to the officers.”
Footage seen by SaharaReporters showed “a group of irate protesters in their numbers, chanting while the security agents tried to contain the outpour on the streets,” reflecting the intensity of the confrontation.
Authorities said the protest quickly grew into a major standoff, with hundreds of people converging around the hospital after news of the Nigerian man’s arrest spread. Protesters were seen attempting to block law enforcement vehicles and prevent officers from leaving with Okeke.
Law enforcement response intensified as the New York Police Department (NYPD) moved in to control the situation. Officers issued dispersal orders, but clashes broke out between protesters and security agents. Several individuals were subsequently taken into custody.
Police confirmed that multiple arrests were made in connection with the unrest, with some individuals facing charges including resisting arrest, obstruction, and criminal mischief.
Meanwhile, the DHS underscored the seriousness of the confrontation, stating, “Assaulting law enforcement is a felony and crime.”
